When Scott Tanski roofed a shot under the crossbar to win his second practice-ending shootout in three days last week, he was mobbed by virtually all of his Connecticut Whale teammates, many of whom leaped into the plexi-glass to try to get at the personable curly-haired redhead.

“It might have been my new stick,” a smiling Tanski said of his latest skills competition victory. “I like to keep it light in practice, and I know the guys knew I hadn’t had a goal yet, so when I win the shootout, it’s pretty special. We’d won a few games, and I just go to practice and try to have fun and work on a lot of things, though a shootout isn’t my specialty. I’ll leave that to Newbs (Kris Newbury) and Zucc (Mats Zuccarello) because they have some pretty moves. I don’t think too much, just think, ‘Shoot the puck,’ and I was lucky to squeeze a few in there. It must be some confidence with that new stick.”

HERSHEY, PA – The Hershey Bears used three second-period goals to double up the Charlotte Checkers, 4-2, and tie the East Division Semifinals 1-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The series will now shift to Charlotte for Games 3, 4 and 5 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

3RD-PERIOD COMEBACK LEADS CHECKERS TO GAME 1 WIN
Bowman gets game winner in return from Hurricanes

HERSHEY, PA. – The Charlotte Checkers erased a one-goal third-period deficit with goals by Zach Boychuk and Drayson Bowman and held on to beat the defending champion Hershey Bears, 5-4, at Giant Center in Game 1.

With the win, the Checkers steal Hershey’s home-ice advantage and lead in the best-of-seven East Division Semifinal series, 1-0. Bowman’s winning tally came in his first game back from a month-long stint with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Rookie netminder stops 20 for sixth straight win

HERSHEY, Pa.Mike Murphy made 20 saves for his first shutout of the season as the Charlotte Checkers blanked the Hershey Bears, 5-0, on Sunday evening in Pennsylvania.

Murphy has now won six straight games and is 15-2-0 in his last 17 starts.

RANGERS, NHL VERSION OF NFL’S “NO-NAME DEFENSE”

In 1972, the Miami Dolphins because known as the “No-Name Defense” because Miami’s impressive offense received much more publicity. Well, nobody is mistaking the 2010-2011 NY Rangers as an offensive juggernaut, but the team has carved out an identity and continues to play some of the leagues best defensive hockey and they’re doing it primarily with third and fourth line-esque players and a constant stream it seems of Connecticut Whale call-ups.
