Brent Thompson could be in line for a Coach of the Year daily double.

The former Hartford Wolf Pack defenseman was named ECHL Coach of the Year last season after leading the Alaska Aces to the regular season and playoff titles. Now Thompson is a leading contender for AHL Coach of the Year after guiding the Bridgeport Sound Tigers from seeming oblivion to challenging the Connecticut Whale for the Northeast Division lead.

ENDINGS AND BEGINNINGS

Connecticut Whale      VERSUS      Bridgeport

The Connecticut Whale ended their four day holiday break and began their toughest stretch of the season that will see them play five games over the next eight days and as they did earlier in the season blew a lead entering the third period dropping a 3-2 decision on a late Tomas Marcinko goal to give the Bridgeport Sound Tigers the win at the Webster Bank Arena Monday night.

Marchinko’s backhander with just 4:26 left in regulation was the difference, but not before the Whale gave it all they had in the last 30 seconds. Sound Tigers goaltender, Kevin Poulin stoned Andre Deveaux just in front of the net with 29.4 seconds remaining on the clock just after the puck did an Evil Kneivel impression jumping over the stick of a wide-open Kelsey Tessier, who had an empty net to stuff it into. Poulin, who made a plethora of good saves throughout, was named the game’s Third Star. Continue reading

Two years ago, they reunited about 4,000 miles away in Anchorage, Alaska, as Thompson hired Boguniecki as a player-coach with the ECHL’s Alaska Aces.

West Haven native Eric Boguniecki was named a Sound Tigers assistant coach on Tuesday under former Hartford Wolf Pack defenseman Brent Thompson.

Boguniecki, 36, begins his coaching career after completing his playing career following the 2009-10 season with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL, where Thompson was coach. The two also played together in the Florida Panthers’ organization for two seasons (1999-2001), and in 2005, Boguniecki had a two-game conditioning assignment in the AHL with Peoria, where Thompson was in his first season as an assistant.

HOWE TO THE HALL

Mark Howe was making the one-hour drive from his beach house in Beach Haven, N.J., to his home in Jackson, N.J., on Tuesday afternoon when his cell phone rang.

Howe said reception in the area isn’t always good, but the connection lasted long enough for him to hear the news that he wasn’t sure would ever come.

In his lucky 13th year of eligibility, Howe was one of four new members of the Hockey Hall of Fame, joining father Gordie and former teammates Ron Francis, Dave Keon, and Bobby Hull, as well as Paul Coffey as Hartford Whalers to earn the honor.
