CONGRATULATIONS TO A GREAT GUY!

We’ve had the good pleasure of speaking and working with Michael Kahn, the owner of the Charlotte Checkers, who today became a part-owner of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Mr. Kahn is just an absolute pleasure to deal with and one of the smartest people we’ve ever had the good pleasure to deal with in hockey. I know this was something that was a goal for him and something he really wanted so we wish him all the best.

Defenseman signs one-year pact

RALEIGH, NCRon Francis, Director of Hockey Operations of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti (san-GIH-neh-tee) on a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay him $600,000 at the NHL level, and $62,500 at the minor-league level for the 2011-12 season.

SORYAL SIGNS IN CAROLINA

Justin Soryal, who has been the Hartford Wolf Pack / Connecticut Whale enforcer for the past three seasons will join another ex-Wolf Pack player, Bobby Sanguinetti when he joins the Carolina Hurricanes AHL club in Charlotte.

Charlotte CheckersCHECKERS RAISE $335K FOR COMMUNITY IN 2010-11
Team has contributed $2M to area charities since 2006

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—The Charlotte Checkers completed their inaugural season in the American Hockey League in giving fashion, raising more than $335,000 for local charities and non-profit organizations. The team has now raised $2 million since Michael Kahn took ownership of the ECHL Checkers in 2006.

Highlighting the donation campaigns were the fifth annual AutoTrader.com Race Night ($20,500) benefiting Zach Bennett, the fifth annual  Pink in the Rink ($26,189) benefiting Carolina Breast Friends and the sixth annual Salute to Heroes, presented by AutoTrader.com, ($28,000) benefiting the families of the CMPD, CFD, Mecklenburg EMS and Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Since their inceptions, Pink in the Rink and Salute to Heroes have raised a combined $246,000.

Talk about being way off base.

Larry Brooks, longtime New York Rangers beat writer for the New York Post, rightfully took George Laraque to task in his column Sunday for saying the NHL team somehow turned their back on Derek Boogaard in his time of need.

Laraque told NHL HOME ICE on SiriusXM Radio that the Rangers handled Boogaard poorly and criticized coach John Tortorella for his feelings about the left wing/enforcer.

OT GOAL SENDS SENS TO FINALS, ENDS CHARLOTTE’S SEASON
Checkers finish with longest playoff run by Hurricanes AHL affiliate

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.  Despite a game-tying goal by Chris Terry with 1:24 left in the third period, the Binghamton Senators got a goal by Ryan Keller at 13:05 of overtime to win the game, 4-3, and Eastern Conference Final series, 4-0.

With the win, the Senators become the first Binghamton-based team to reach the Calder Cup Finals since the 1981-82 Whalers. Binghamton also becomes the first team since the 1974-75 New Haven Nighthawks to reach the Calder Cup Finals after finishing fifth in its division during the regular season.

Checkers trail best-of-seven series 3-0; Game 4 tomorrow

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.Zack Smith recorded a hat trick and Robin Lehner stopped 37 of 38 shots as the Binghamton Senators downed the Charlotte Checkers, 7-1, on Tuesday evening.

With the loss, the Checkers now trail the best-of-seven series, 3-0. Charlotte will look to avoid elimination on Wednesday in game 4 from Binghamton. The game will be available on Time Warner Cable digital channel 520.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.— Robin Lehner stopped all 33 shots he faced as the Charlotte Checkers were shutout by the Binghamton Senators, 3-0, on Friday evening.

With the loss, the Checkers are now down 0-2 in the best-of-seven series. Game 3 from Binghamton will be on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
