DUBINSKY IN FOR FOUR, CALLAHAN UPCOMING

New York RangersFormer Hartford Wolf Pack centerman and current New York Ranger stalwart Brandon Dubinsky has resigned with the team for a reported four years for $16.8 million, a $4.2 million cap hit avoiding arbitration.

This is a huge signing for the team and for Dubinsky who had a big season for the Rangers in the last campaign leading the club in goals, assists and points (24-30-54), while establishing career highs in each category.

Up next for the Rangers is turning their attention to the likely new team captain, and former Hartford Wolf Pack right winger, Ryan Callahan. Expect Callahan to land somewhere in the $4.5 – $5.o million range for around the same contract length…perhaps a year longer to try and minimize having to go through both he and Dubinsky hitting free agency at the same time.

Here’s the official release from the Rangers:

RICHARDS A RANGER

New York RangersIt’s official – Nine Years nearly $60million dollars and a $6.5/year hit to the cap. Let’s see if the Rangers a) can now sign all their Restricted Free Agents b) find chemistry with Marion Gaborik and c) find a scoring top line left winger so that the Blueshirts have a legitimate first line.

As we see it, this is an awful long time to give a 31-year old player who had concussion issues last season and while he has been a very good player, he has not played in a media market like New York City and may well be on the down side of his career.

While awaiting free-agent center Brad Richards’ decision on which of a half-dozen suitors he was going to choose Friday, the New York Rangers signed two left wings with different styles.

First, unrestricted free-agent wing Mike Rupp inked a three-year, $4.5 million contract, and the Rangers later re-signed Ruslan Fedotenko for one year and $1.4 million, a $400,000 raise.

Richards, the cream of the free-agent crop that began with more than 50 signings at noon Friday, met with several teams in agent Pat Morris’ office in Mississauga, Ontario, before saying he would wait until at least Saturday to decide where he’s headed.
