SPOTLIGHT: DEVEAUX TO THE PRESS BOX

Bruce BerletBY: Bruce Berlet

With first-line right wing Andre Deveaux suspended three games because of boarding incidents in two games against the Springfield Falcons last weekend, the Connecticut Whale could use some reinforcements.

They could be getting them from their parent club as New York Rangers coach John Tortorella said Tuesday that he’s considering asking wing Wojtek Wolski and center Erik Christensen to accept conditioning assignments to the Whale to get them playing time.

DEVEAUX LOST TO WHALE VIA SUSPENSION

AHL LogoRight Wing Andre Deveaux lost his job in the NHL with the New York Rangers when he took a foolish elbowing penalty. “I Guess I elbowed my way out of the NHL,” he then told the media.

Well apparently he hasn’t learned form that lesson and the American Hockey League has now spoken. After a game misconduct for boarding Saturday in Hartford, and a tough game in Springfield the following day, the AHL has responded by suspending the right-winger for three games. Deveaux will now miss both games in Norfolk and next Wednesday’s game in Portland against the Pirates.

After the game on Saturday, Whale head coach Ken Gernander had no problem with the call and said he felt it was the right call.

Here’s the official release:

SPOTLIGHT: SOUNDING OUT THE TIGERS

Bruce Berlet 7BY: Bruce Berlet

After a well-earned four-day break, the Northeast Division-leading Connecticut Whale looks to extend their latest points streak to four games when they visit their intrastate rival Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Monday night.

The Whale headed to the Christmas hiatus off a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Adirondack Phantoms on Wednesday night, on defenseman Pavel Valentenko’s 50-foot laser with 16.2 seconds left off a faceoff win by veteran center Kris Newbury. Defenseman Brendan Bell, who assisted on all three Whale goals, touched the puck to Valentenko for the second winner of his life, the first coming only nine games earlier in a 4-2 win over the Hershey Bears on Nov. 29.

SPOTLIGHT: KELSEY TESSIER

Bruce Berlet 7BY: Bruce Berlet

Kelsey Tessier prides himself in being a responsible two-way player with lots of grit and a penchant for doing little things such as finishing checks and getting up the opposition’s skin, a major reason he received the Seventh Player/Unsung Hero Award from the media as a rookie pro last season.

In his second pro go-around in Hartford, Tessier has again added a third major quality, mentor to two more of the smallest players on the Connecticut Whale. Just as he did with the Quebec Remparts, Tessier has been a kind of a guidance counselor to rookie forwards Ryan Bourque and Jonathan Audy-Marchessault, former teammates in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League who share an apartment in downtown Hartford a few floors from Tessier.

JUST ONE OF THOSE DAYS…

Connecticut-Whale_thumb_thumb_thumb1      VERSUS     Hershey

Rosanne Rosannadanna was a character created by Gilda Radner on Saturday Night Live back in the 1970’s.  Rosanne used to do “Weekend Update” with Chevy Chase and would always end here reports with the phrase, “Well, if it’s not-one-thing-it’s-another. If it’s not (Fill in the blank) then it’s (something really silly).” That sentiment so perfectly summarizes the Connecticut Whale’s 5-3 loss to the Hershey Bears in front of 3,027 Friday night at the XL Center.

Kris Newbury was at his locker when a loose cinder block somewhere in the ceiling became loose and fell coming through the dropped ceiling and hitting his shin guards and the name plate, changing direction and not hitting the Whale’s top centerman. Continue reading
