WHALE DROWN IN COLD PORTLAND WATERS

The Connecticut Whale’s losing streak stretched to seven games Wednesday night, as they lost a 4-2 decision to the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Connecticut (19-15-2-4, 44 pts.) did maintain first place in the Northeast Division despite the loss, remaining two points ahead of the Albany Devils, who lost 5-4 at home to the Norfolk Admirals.

Four different Pirates scored in the victory for Portland, Andy Miele had two assists, and Justin Pogge Pogge (7-5-3) made 22 saves.  Erik Christensen and Scott Tanski scored the Whale goals, and Kris Newbury assisted on both.

I’D BE SITTING IN THE BACK OF THE BUS

Connecticut Whale head coach Ken Gernander does not handle losing well and it is almost a certainty that he was beside himself on Monday afternoon at the Cumberland County Civic Center after his Whale amassed a three goal lead over the Portland Pirates through the first 36:12 only to give it all back over the final 24:48 before eventually succumbing to the home team 5-4 in overtime on Nathan Oystrick’s second goal of the game.

Over the first period and a half, the Whale built a 3-0 lead on two goals by from Kelsey Tessier and the fourth goal in as many games from the AHL’s Reebok Player of the Week, Kris Newbury.

SENATORS EXPLODE FOR 7, TAKE GAME 3
Checkers trail best-of-seven series 3-0; Game 4 tomorrow

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.Zack Smith recorded a hat trick and Robin Lehner stopped 37 of 38 shots as the Binghamton Senators downed the Charlotte Checkers, 7-1, on Tuesday evening.

With the loss, the Checkers now trail the best-of-seven series, 3-0. Charlotte will look to avoid elimination on Wednesday in game 4 from Binghamton. The game will be available on Time Warner Cable digital channel 520.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Paced by seven different goal scorers, the Binghamton Senators beat the Charlotte Checkers, 7-4, in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

With the win, Binghamton takes a 1-0 lead in a best-of-seven series which will continue with Game 2 in Charlotte tomorrow night.

HERSHEY, PA – The Hershey Bears used three second-period goals to double up the Charlotte Checkers, 4-2, and tie the East Division Semifinals 1-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The series will now shift to Charlotte for Games 3, 4 and 5 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

3RD-PERIOD COMEBACK LEADS CHECKERS TO GAME 1 WIN
Bowman gets game winner in return from Hurricanes

HERSHEY, PA. – The Charlotte Checkers erased a one-goal third-period deficit with goals by Zach Boychuk and Drayson Bowman and held on to beat the defending champion Hershey Bears, 5-4, at Giant Center in Game 1.

With the win, the Checkers steal Hershey’s home-ice advantage and lead in the best-of-seven East Division Semifinal series, 1-0. Bowman’s winning tally came in his first game back from a month-long stint with the Carolina Hurricanes.

WILKES-BARRE, PA. – Behind a four-goal first period, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the Charlotte Checkers, 6-3, on Friday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

For the first-place Penguins, their seventh win in the season series was their league-leading 54th win of the season and denied the Checkers (41-26-2-7) a chance to clinch a playoff berth.
