SPOTLIGHT: BICKEL STU – A RANGER SPECIALTY

Bruce BerletBY: Bruce Berlet

When it comes to feel-good stories in the NHL this season, you’d be hard-pressed to find one better than New York Rangers defenseman Stu Bickel, who began the season playing on Asylum Street in Hartford.

Though Bickel will never be confused with elusive Hall of Famers Bobby Orr or Cheshire-bred Brian Leetch, he has proven to be one of the NHL’s all-time steals since being acquired from the Anaheim Ducks on Nov. 23, 2010 for disgruntled Hartford Wolf Pack defenseman Nigel Williams.

FAN FARE: MIKHAIL PASHNIN

New York RBY: Adam Gavriel

Let’s start with the simple understanding that when depending upon Google translating an article from Russian to English there could be some slight nuances, and maybe even who phrases not exactly written as they were meant to be.

Given that ground rule, according to cska-hockey.ru New York Rangers defensive prospect Mikhail Pashnin was selected by Lokomotiv, yes that Lokomotiv, after the KHL agreed to a makeshift expansion draft in order to rebuild that devastated organization. Remember, this is the Lokomotiv club that was struck by tragedy earlier in the season when the charter plane carrying their team crashed. The plan had been for the 6’, 187-pounder from Chelyabinsk, Russia to play for in North America, either with the Connecticut Whale or the Rangers themselves in the upcoming 2012- 2013 campaign, however it would certainly appear as though that might change now. Pashnin will finish the current season with CSKA Moscow. The soon to be 23 year old has three goals and three assists for six points and sixty PIM in 46 games this season.

SPOTLIGHT: JAMES DOLAN SPEAKS

Bruce BerletBY: Bruce Berlet

New York Rangers owner James Dolan made a rare, spontaneous visit to the Madison Square Garden media room after his team’s 3-0 victory over the Nashville Panthers on Tuesday night.

Dolan, the CEO of MSG, praised Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather for building a team from within with youth and good drafting that is close to winning its first Stanley Cup since 1994. Dolan didn’t mention Connecticut Whale coach Ken Gernander and assistants J.J. Daigneault and Pat Boller, but coach John Tortorella has often praised their work as the Rangers (29-11-4) have moved to the top of the NHL’s overall standings with 62 points in 44 games.

SPOTLIGHT: DAN GIRARDI

Bruce BerletBY: Bruce Berlet

One of the major tenets of sports writing is no rooting in the press box.

Well, it’s difficult not to stand up and cheer for New York Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi being named to the NHL All-Star team on Thursday.

While most of the 42 players who will be part of a fantasy-style draft Jan 27 to determine the teams for the All-Star Game two days later in Ottawa were high-priced high draft picks, Girardi never heard his name called at an entry draft. And while that’s a rarity, he’s unique in being the only one of those 42 players to have started his pro career in the ECHL.
