Who knows, maybe the New York Islanders will be moving to Hartford in four years?

That could be one of the possibilities after residents of Nassau County on Long Island voted down a $400 million referendum in a special election Monday that could have led to the construction of a new home for the Islanders. It failed by a 33,526 to 24,553 vote in what elections officials said was a very low turnout for the unusual midsummer election.

New York RangersNew York Rangers president and general manager, Glen Sather has released a statement on the upcoming Nassau County Referendum. It reads as follows:

“The rivalry that has existed between the Rangers and Islanders for almost 40 years is one of the best in hockey and in all of sports.   The intense passion and emotion involved in these games is something we cherish and would like to see continue for generations to come.   We urge Rangers fans, Islanders fans and all hockey fans in Nassau County to vote yes for the referendum on Monday, August 1″.   – Glen Sather

The financially strapped New York Islanders and their top affiliate Bridgeport Sound Tigers might finally have got some much needed/desired help Wednesday.

The Islanders’ lease with the Nassau Coliseum doesn’t end until 2015, but concern about the NHL franchise has been going on for years. But Islanders and Nassau County officials announced a $400 million development and job creation plan on Long Island that includes building a world-class sports-entertainment destination center on the site of the antiquated Coliseum with a new sports arena and minor league baseball park at the nearby Mitchel Field Athletic Complex.
