WHALE WEEKLY: January 3-8, 2012

The Whale finished out their run of five games in eight nights by going 1-1-1-0 in three games over the holiday weekend, including two on the road. Connecticut was foiled Friday in Worcester, as they lost 4-3 to the Sharks, but then rolled to a 5-2 home victory over the Springfield Falcons in Saturday night’s New Year’s Eve match-up. On Monday, the Whale traveled for the first time this season to Portland, where they were defeated in overtime by the Pirates, 5-4. Kris Newbury, last week’s Reebok/AHL Player of the Week, has run his Whale season-high point streak to eight games, in which he has tallied four goals and eleven assists. The Whale currently sit in first place in the Northeast Division, seven points ahead of second-place Adirondack.

WHALE WEEKLY: November 28-December 4, 2011

The Whale took two out of three games this past week, defeating the Portland Pirates at home on Wednesday, 3-2 in overtime, before heading on the road for a pair of post-Thanksgiving tilts in Bridgeport and in Springfield. Connecticut was thumped, 6-2, by the Sound Tigers on Friday, but the team responded with a rousing, last-moment, 3-2 win over the Falcons on Saturday. Andreas Thuresson had two goals, including the game-winner with 21.6 seconds left, on Saturday, while Jonathan Audy-Marchessault tallied three points on the weekend (1-3-4).

GREENVILLE, SC – The Greenville Road Warriors were unable to earn a win last week in the opening weekend of the 2011-12 season against a pair of Atlantic Division opponents. This week they travel to Gwinnett, and renew the Battle of I-85, in search of their first win of the season.

The parent New York Rangers recalled defenseman Brendan Bell from the Connecticut Whale Sunday.

Bell’s call-up came only hours after center Kris Newbury was summoned after getting a goal and two assists and being named the No. 2 star in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday night. Newbury was leading the Whale (1-1-0-2) in goals (four), assists (four) and points (eight) while excelling on a line with newcomer Andre Deveaux and speedy rookie left wing Carl Hagelin, who had two third-period goals, including a brilliant shorthanded effort, and an assist against the Sound Tigers. In fact, the Hagelin-Newbury-Deveaux line combined for the Whale’s four goals plus four assists.

WHALE WEEKLY: October 3-9, 2011

The Whale are set to hit the road this weekend, as they open up the 15th season of American Hockey League action in the city of Hartford. Connecticut will begin the year with a pair of road tilts, as they open the season Saturday at Adirondack to face the Phantoms before heading south to take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Sunday.

This week:

The Whale open up the 2011-12 season with two straight road games this weekend, beginning with Saturday’s meeting with the Adirondack Phantoms in Glens Falls, NY (7:00 PM). Connecticut will then face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday (5:05 PM) at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in the first of four games with the Pens this season.
