Blowing leads become a major problem to this point in the early part of the season for Connecticut Whale head coach Ken Gernander’s bunch. Sunday afternoon at the Mile One Centre in Newfoundland, the Whale wasted two-goal leads twice before dropping the game in regulation, this time a 4-3 decision to the St. John’s IceCaps; capping a weekend of back-to-back losses  to the AHL’s best.

The season is fourteen games old and of the team’s total of seven losses, (7-4-1-2) they have blown leads in six of those contests including a number of two-goal leads and a three goal lead too.

Jason Jaffray scored a hat trick, and Carl Klingberg added a goal and two assists, to lead the St. John’s IceCaps to an 8-4 victory over the Connecticut Whale Saturday night at Mile One Centre.

Jason DeSantis and Marco Rosa also had a goal and an assist each for St. John’s, and Spencer Machacek had three assists.  John Mitchell scored a pair of goals for the Whale.

MAYBE THE WHALE SHOULD PLAY FROM BEHIND AND TRY AND WIN LATE?

“Disappointing? Frustrating? Which word do you want to use?” Connecticut Whale head coach Ken Gernander said to start his post game press conference after his squad dropped their second straight in a 6-3 home loss to the St. Johns IceCaps in front of 4,028 Friday night.

Both words Gernander used were apropos considering that the Whale have struggled to maintain leads to this point in the season. The previous game in Bridgeport saw them surrender two goals in a span of 3:53 to waste a two goal lead before losing in overtime. Friday, it was three goals in a span of 4:16 that saw a one goal lead turn into a two goal deficit that did them in.
