Talk about being way off base.

Larry Brooks, longtime New York Rangers beat writer for the New York Post, rightfully took George Laraque to task in his column Sunday for saying the NHL team somehow turned their back on Derek Boogaard in his time of need.

Laraque told NHL HOME ICE on SiriusXM Radio that the Rangers handled Boogaard poorly and criticized coach John Tortorella for his feelings about the left wing/enforcer.

Former Hartford Wolf Pack coach Ryan McGill is looking for a job.

McGill wasn’t retained by the Calgary Flames, making him the third member of the coaching staff to be let go after the team missed the playoffs for a second consecutive season. Goalie coach Jamie McLennan and assistant Rob Cookson also didn’t have the option years of their contracts picked up. Dave Lowry is the only assistant to be retained under coach Brent Sutter.

The email that arrived from the New York Rangers late Friday night was stunningly eerie.

It simply started:

NEW YORK – The New York Rangers are very saddened to announce the passing of Derek Boogaard.

“Derek was an extremely kind and caring individual,” New York Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather said. “He was a very thoughtful person who will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”

How is that possible, I thought? Just a few hours earlier, I had typed the name Roman Lyashenko, a crafty center who joined the Rangers with Martin Rucinsky in a 2002 trade deadline deal with Dallas that sent Manny Malhotra and Hartford Wolf Pack wing Barrett Heisten to the Stars.
