SPOTLIGHT: CASEY WELLMAN

Bruce BerletBy Bruce Berlet

Casey Wellman played several sports growing up in Brentwood, Calif., hardly a hotbed for hockey.

But Wellman got hooked on the game played on ice after his father, Brad, met several New Jersey Devils players who asked him to skate with them in Boston.

“Dad didn’t know how to skate, so he was pretty upset about that,” Wellman said with a smile.

A PUZZLING MOVE BY THE RANGERS

In a rather interesting move today, the New York Rangers signed another depth defenseman in veteran Brendan Bell. It’s unlikely that the Rangers see Bell as an NHL regular and they already have their veteran depth d-man in the recently resigned Steve Eminger. Likely this move is for the Connecticut Whale who also have a plethora of defenseman on the roster.

It’s just speculation on our part, but we would assume that a move might be forthcoming that involves moving some defensive depth to obtain either a front line left-winger or perhaps, again this is just speculation, Shea Weber?

In the meantime however, Brendan Bell is now a member of the New York Rangers organization.

Here’s the official release:

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers will have a familiar look to Connecticut hockey fans behind the bench this season.

West Haven native Eric Boguniecki was named a Sound Tigers assistant coach on Tuesday under former Hartford Wolf Pack defenseman Brent Thompson.

Boguniecki, 36, begins his coaching career after completing his playing career following the 2009-10 season with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL, where Thompson was coach. The two also played together in the Florida Panthers’ organization for two seasons (1999-2001), and in 2005, Boguniecki had a two-game conditioning assignment in the AHL with Peoria, where Thompson was in his first season as an assistant.

KOLARIK COMING BACK

New York Rangers

In a strong and important move for Connecticut Whale fans, Chad Kolarik has been resigned by the New York Rangers.

Kolarik had a good season that was cut short by injury after arriving from Springfield in a deal that sent Ex-Captain Dane Byers further up I-91.

With Jeremy Williams having signed overseas, and the possibility of making the NHL with the Rangers, you would expect that Kolarik will come to Hartford and be looking for scoring on a regular basis.

Somewhere, Head Coach Ken Gernander is breathing a little easier.
