After 15 years playing and coaching in the University of Connecticut’s antiquated rink covered by an open dome, Bruce Marshall thought he was finished with outdoor hockey.

“Coaching outdoors wasn’t high on my list to do,” Marshall, a 1985 UConn graduate in his 23rd season as head coach, said with a chuckle. “I’d already checked that off by bucket list. But I’m use to at least a roof (over a rink), so we’ll see what it’s like without a roof.”

HOCKEY CARES

uconnThe University of Connecticut women’s hockey team will host their annual Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer game Saturday at 4 p.m. against third-ranked Boston University at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs.

The Huskies, who entered a game at BU on Friday night on a five-game winning streak, have raised more than $31,000 in the past four years for the program, the most in the Hockey East conference since the inception of Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer.

breast_cancer_ribbonThe Huskies will continue their fundraising efforts at Saturday’s game as fans are encouraged to visit the marketing table inside Freitas Ice Forum where they can support the team and the Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer program. Interested fans can purchase a Skating Strides T-shirt for $5, a “Pink Skate” that will be posted around the rink for $1, Hockey East merchandise and much more.

The Huskies will play Providence on Feb. 13 in the finale of “UConn Day” in the “Harvest-Properties.com Whalers Hockey Fest” at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. “UConn Day” will start with an alumni skate at 9-10:15 a.m., followed by a family skating session from 10:15 to 11 and then lunch in the club room in the suites. The UConn men’s hockey team will play Sacred Heart at 1 p.m., and the women then will face the Lady Friars at 4 p.m.

COLLEGE GAME SCHEDULE FOR WHALERS HOCKEY FEST ANNOUNCED
Wesleyan-Trinity, Army-AIC Matchups Added to Outdoor Hockey Festivities at Rentschler Field

Howard L. Baldwin, chairman of Whalers Sports and Entertainment, today announced the schedule of college games for Whalers Hockey Fest 2011 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT.

Whale LogoA Nutmeg-State tussle between Wesleyan University and Trinity College, and a New England regional battle pitting Army against American International College (AIC), have been added to the previously-announced outdoor games between the University of Connecticut Men’s Team and Sacred Heart University and the UConn Women’s Team and Providence College.

When asked about his team’s involvement in this historic event, Army Coach Brian Riley commented “Every season you look to create special memories.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us and we’re sure it will create memories that will last a lifetime.  We are thankful to Mr. Baldwin and his organization for giving us this opportunity.”  AIC Coach Gary Wright also acknowledged the significance of The Yellow Jackets’ involvement in Hockey Fest. “We are excited about having the opportunity to participate in this grand event. It’s a great thing for our college, alumni, and the sport of hockey. Most certainly, it will be a wonderful experience for both teams, possibly punctuated by a few snowflakes.”

The outdoor college action starts with a doubleheader Sunday, February 13.  The UConn Men vs. Sacred Heart contest will face off at 1:00 PM, followed by the UConn Women vs. Providence College at 4:00 PM. 

Another doubleheader is on tap for Tuesday, February 15, with the Trinity Women’s Team battling Wesleyan at 4:00 PM and those two schools’ men’s squads hitting the ice at 8:15 PM.

Then on Saturday, February 19, Army and AIC will do battle at 2:00 PM.

Whalers Hockey Fest 2011 will run from February 11-20 at Rentschler Field.  In addition to the college games, the greatest hockey event in Connecticut history will feature: a Hartford Whalers alumni vs. Boston Bruins alumni classic, an NHL Legends game commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 1986 NHL All-Star Game being played in Hartford, more than a dozen elite high school and prep school games and a “Whaler Village”, featuring exhibitors, games and the Whalers Mobile Hall of Fame.  On February 19th the CT Whale will battle the Providence Bruins in the second all-time AHL outdoor game.
