FROM THE CREASE with BRUCE BERLET

Gordie Howe might be “Mr. Hockey” in the sporting world, but Howard Baldwin has held a similar title in Hartford seemingly forever.

Oh, there was about a two-decade sabbatical from the Insurance City that included the start of a filmmaking business in Hollywood that still consumes some of his time, though more of wife Karen.

But Baldwin returned to Connecticut about two years ago intent on reviving the pro hockey market in Hartford and bringing the NHL back to a city that he steadfastly believes it never should have left.

WHALE LOOK TO MAKE TWO POINTS AND COME UP SHORT ON BOTH

Connecticut Whale VERSUS  Providence

“It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.” The start to Charles Dickens, The Tale of Two Cities.

It’s so cliché to use it to describe anything these days, but it truly did describe Saturday’s Whale Bowl at Rentscheler Field that saw the Connecticut Whale’s three game winning streak stopped via a skills competition shootout 5-4 in front of, what will go down in the record books anyway, an AHL record 21,673.

NEWBURY BACK TO NEW YORK

According to the beat reporters in New York, Kris Newbury has been recalled and will play tomorrow night against the LA Kings.

What is going to be interesting is if Newbury s back in time for Friday’s game against Adirondack or the WhaleBowl on Saturday.

The reporters also said there were only two players considered for the call-up and Head Coach John Tortorella would not say who it was.

It’s really between one of two players.

Brodie Dupont has had 10 points (4g, 6a) in his last eight games and has been superb all over the ice.

Dale Weise has 9 points (3g, 6a) in his last six games. Weise also missed three games with the shingles and is really trying to get his game back in step to where it was. He’s on a tear also and if he were 100% on his game this would be a no –brainer, but given the current situation as it is, Dupont is the one we would bet was under consideration.

More on this story later.

EAST HARTFORD, CT. – All that was missing were the strains of “The Stripper” reverberating through empty Rentschler Field.

Connecticut Whale rookie defenseman Tomas Kundratek lost the team’s practice-ending shootout Tuesday, and on this day, that meant having to impersonate Michael Ontkean, aka Ned Braden, in the signature scene from the slapstick comedy “Slap Shot.”
