When Scott Tanski roofed a shot under the crossbar to win his second practice-ending shootout in three days last week, he was mobbed by virtually all of his Connecticut Whale teammates, many of whom leaped into the plexi-glass to try to get at the personable curly-haired redhead.

“It might have been my new stick,” a smiling Tanski said of his latest skills competition victory. “I like to keep it light in practice, and I know the guys knew I hadn’t had a goal yet, so when I win the shootout, it’s pretty special. We’d won a few games, and I just go to practice and try to have fun and work on a lot of things, though a shootout isn’t my specialty. I’ll leave that to Newbs (Kris Newbury) and Zucc (Mats Zuccarello) because they have some pretty moves. I don’t think too much, just think, ‘Shoot the puck,’ and I was lucky to squeeze a few in there. It must be some confidence with that new stick.”

Say what you will about the 2011-2012 version of the Connecticut Whale, but this is a team of character. They find ways to win late; they find ways to win games early, they can win games ugly and they can win games like they did Friday night when they visited the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island and in front of a good crowd of 7,352 just beat up the last place Bruins 4-1 with a total team effort from the net on out.

Chad Johnson, (28 saves, 7-3-2) was the games first star making several strong stops and only a shot that he had no chance on, a short-handed Zach Hamill third period goal was able to get by him.

Maybe having a lead entering the third period is a bad thing for this year’s edition of the Connecticut Whale. They’ve had a lead at some point in each of the previous sixteen games coming into the Dunkin Donuts Center Sunday afternoon for a battle with the Providence Bruins. The Whale have squandered those leads to the tune of seven losses. However in this contest, the Whale never led; well not until John Mitchell and Carl Hagelin scored in the shootout capping an improbable comeback from a two-goal, third period deficit to give the Whale the 3-2 win.

WHALE WEEKLY: March 28-April 3, 2011

Connecticut WhaleThe Whale (38-28-2-6, 84 pts.) split four games over the past week, winning two out of three home games before falling in the weekend’s finale at Providence. Connecticut came from behind to defeat Springfield, 3-2, on Wednesday in Hartford, before rallying late to beat Charlotte, in a shootout, in an instant-classic on Friday, also 3-2. The Whale were then defeated by the Sound Tigers, 5-1, in Saturday’s GEICO Connecticut Cup action at the XL Center, later dropping a 4-2 road decision to the Bruins to close out the week on Sunday. Derek Couture scored four times during the week’s action, while winger Tommy Grant recorded his first two professional points with a pair of assists on Sunday, his pro debut.

CROMWELL, CT – The Connecticut Whale bus wouldn’t get into gear after a practice in suburban Syracuse during the team’s only venture into Canada this season to Toronto and Hamilton last week.

But Johnny Davis, a bus driver for 25 years and the team’s chauffeur since the birth of the Hartford Wolf Pack in 1997, solved the problem in 90 minutes after calling his boss at Dattco.

Connecticut Whale VERSUS      Providence

When Michael Del Zotto, playing in his first game in Hartford since being sent down to the AHL by the parent New York Rangers, hit the crossbar just 4:22 into the game, that would summarize how the night went for the Connecticut Whale who despite putting two in the net over the final 2:30 of the game, dropped a 3-2 decision to the last place Providence Bruins in front of a raucous 9,118 at the XL Center Saturday night.
